Why, why, why!

A friend of mine cried out tonight ‘why, why, why’ in frustration. Last night fighting erupted between two tribes in South Sudan between the Dinka and Nuer. Today, it only worsened. The village is Abwong and we teach a school and carry on ministry activities there.

Tonight as we tried to calm our hearts and minds, my friend again left us with ‘I just want to stand between them and ask ‘why, why, why”. Out of frustration. He went on to explain that he has played football (soccer to us Americans) and has played together with Dinka and Nuer at the same time. His friends are now killing each other.

The SIM property is situated between the areas where the two tribes live in ‘town’ (really a village).

Please pray for calm heads and that peace would prevail. Everyone from SIM was in Nairobi for a Sudan wide retreat, but most have left by now. Two African missionaries have already returned, but by God’s will, only the fathers are there and the rest of their family was a day behind, so they are not there right now. More missionaries are set to go in, but we are now in a holding pattern to see where things go.

Please pray for the missionaries Hezekias and Getachew who are there right now. Seven have died and one was next to the compound.

SIM Sudan SLC 2009

A collection of photos and video taken during SIM Sudan’s 2009 SLC (Spiritual Life Conference). It’s more like a spiritual retreat than a conference.

Happy Birthday Avery!

It is hard to believe that a year ago Tuesday Avery came into this world! We celebrated her birthday a day early with some of our SIM family here in Nairobi. She slowly warmed up to the idea of eating her piece of cake and took a few bites. We feel so very blessed to be her parents and wanted to share with you the joy she brings to us!

Favorite TIME Images of 2008

TIME released 10’s for a number of categories. I thumbed through the photos (mostly lame, I think) and their editorial cartoons (I read these as a young kid and credit Bill DeOre for that).

First, my American Political Cartoon…

And now for something internationally flavored…

Siamoy, an Afghan woman from remote Badakhshan province in Afghanistan, feeds her one-month old baby. The remote, mountain region has the highest maternity mortality rate in the world.
